Michigan Chaining Correlation

ABI was excited to work with the Michigan Department of Transportation to prove the Rapid Automated Sounding (RAS) system as an effective and efficient replacement for manual chain drags.  MDOT used an independent engineering firm (HDR) to perform a manual chain drag on a bridge near Flint, Michigan.  The RAS system results for this bridge were also compared to another technology being used as a chain drag replacement.  The RAS inspection correlated significantly better to the independent chain drag than the alternative technology.  As seen on the right, the delamination maps from the manual chain drag and the RAS system correlate very well.  The RAS system was able to complete the inspection in just 2 minutes!  Not only does the RAS system provide accurate and reliable delamination and crack maps, but it's a fast and safe replacement for manual chain drags.  We'd like to thank the Michigan Department of Transportation as well as HDR for the crucial part they played in this study.
