Vincent Thomas Bridge

In August 2017, ABI traveled to California to help Caltrans inspect the Vincent Thomas Bridge in Long Beach. Due to the size and high traffic conditions of this bridge, Caltrans was unable to close lanes and perform routine chaining inspections. Using the RAS system, ABI was able to locate delaminations on this bridge without any lane closures.  A single lane slow down was performed and traffic was allowed to continue in the lanes that were not being inspected. When the RAS system finished inspecting a lane, traffic was immediately allowed to proceed in that lane. The entire bridge (~290,000 sq. ft.) was inspected from start to finish in 4 hours. We would like to thank Caltrans for having us out to help with this difficult problem.

March 2019 Update: ABI has since improved the RAS system, and this same inspection would now take only 20 minutes.
